We love meat, and so are our dogs. So I have a feeling that for most of you, whenever you eat meat, you always give your dog some.
Maybe it is because you just love giving your dog some of the things you eat, or maybe because they deserve it as a reward. And aside from chicken and beef, one of the things that you may be feeding your dog is salami.
Yummy Salami!
Salami is a cured sausage that originated in the southern, eastern, and central parts of Europe. Its main ingredients consist of fermented and air-dried meat, most of the time, pork. However, other meat such as beef or poultry can be an alternative to making salami.
Some people have salami on sandwiches, in salads or even on pizza. So if your dog gives you the puppy dog eyes and starts begging for some salami next time you have some, should you feed it to him/her? Can dogs eat salami?
Can Dogs Eat Salami?
The answer to this question is NO. You should not be feeding your dog salami.
Why should you not give your dog that small slice of meat. I mean, what is so bad about giving your dog a little slice of meat, right? Well here is why you should not feed your dog a salami.
At times, salami may be toxic to your dogs. Especially if it contains certain flavoring ingredients (more on this in a moment).
However, even though the meat is not generally toxic to your dogs, it contains so much sodium and fat which can be dangerous for your furry partner. You can probably get away with giving your doggo a small amount. Like a small, single slice. However, do not give your dog a large amount of salami. It will only make your dog unhealthy.
Just like with humans, eating too much salt and fats can put your dog in danger. It increases the risk of them developing conditions such as salt poisoning or kidney damage. If you have fed your dog more than enough amounts of salami, watch out for these symptoms:
- Increased urination
- Increased thirst
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
Salami Can Be Toxic To Dogs
Now, we said earlier that sometimes salami may contain ingredients or flavorings that may prove toxic to your dog. If your salami includes ingredients like onion and/or garlic powders, then it is toxic to your dog.
So our final verdict with regards to this matter is that we highly recommend NOT to feed your furry loved ones salami. Especially if it contains ingredients such as onion and garlic powder.
As for pepperoni, we also recommend the same. Pepperonis are larger slices of salami and are usually spicier.
And that adds another problem. Dogs feel uncomfortable when they eat spicy foods and it could upset their stomach too.
