Contrary to what kids may want to believe, broccoli can be a yummy snack – just ask your dogs!

But is it really safe for our dogs to eat vegetables and, specifically, can dogs eat broccoli? If you found this page, then you must be wondering about that very question!

Can Dogs Eat Broccoli?

So let’s dig in and answer it, shall we? Can dogs eat broccoli?

The short answer is, yes, feel free to go ahead and feed your dog broccoli. They can eat it either cooked or raw – as long as the broccoli is not seasoned and not oiled.

However, like many human foods, broccoli comes with its own set of pros and cons when it comes to feeding it to dogs.

Before we dive deeper, it is important to know that broccoli should be consumed in moderation. Remember, too much of anything can potentially be harmful to your pets!

Broccoli contains a number of different nutrients that can be beneficial to your dogs. It is high in fiber, low in fat, and filled with vitamin C. This is great for dogs who are on a nutritional diet.

Potential Hazards For Dogs That Eat Broccoli

On the flip side, this healthy green snack contains a number of potentially harmful components for our pets. Broccoli florets contain isothiocyanates which can cause gastric irritation in some dogs. For some dog breeds, the gastric irritation can be mild, while it can be severe for others. So be sure to feed your dog amounts of broccoli according to their size.

Aside from those hazards, broccoli can also cause obstructions or blockages in dogs… especially in smaller breeds. These can block your dog?s esophagus which can hamper their breathing.

To avoid this, make sure to cut broccoli up into smaller sizes before feeding it to your doggo. And not only cut it up into smaller sizes, but feed it to them in smaller quantities. This way, if your dog shows any negative signs after eating, you can stop giving them broccoli right away.
